Our gritsand, also known as sharp sand, is a coarse 0/4mm aggregate produced from washed, crushed gritstone. It’s commonly used as a laying course for flagstones, block paving, and patio installations. When placed over a well-compacted sub-base, it provides a stable, free-draining bed that supports long-term surface performance and load distribution.
Gritsand is a sharp, angular sand produced by washing and crushing natural gritstone. With a 0/4mm grading, it contains a mix of coarse particles that create interlocking strength when compacted, making it a go-to material for use beneath paving and flagging. This structure also promotes effective drainage, reducing the risk of standing water beneath exterior surfaces.
Unlike softer building sands, gritsand does not bind tightly into mortar and is not intended for use in jointing or plastering. Instead, its strength lies in its ability to provide a firm, well-drained foundation layer. This makes it ideal for external landscaping applications, such as patios, garden paths, driveways, and other paved areas that require load-bearing stability over time.
When used correctly over a sound and compacted sub-base, gritsand helps prevent movement or settlement of paving slabs, allowing for a clean and level finish that lasts. The coarse particles reduce compaction issues and allow water to flow freely through the bedding layer, a key feature in preventing frost heave or water damage in colder climates.
At PMW Quarries, our gritsand is supplied loose in bulk and delivered directly to sites across Huddersfield and West Yorkshire. It’s suitable for both small-scale residential paving projects and large commercial hardscaping works, offering consistent grading and reliable performance with every load.

Our high quality washed Silica Sand is processed and created to a consistency of 0/2mm grading to ensure meeting the standards of both horse equestrian arenas and sports based applications. Each batch of this silica based arena sand, ensures a reliable particle size and compaction characteristics to offer a wide range of installations due to it's drainage capabilities and ability to craft stable surfaces.
Our building sand or often referred as river sand is a fine 0/2mm soft sand used for block or brick laying and general mortar applications. Due to its consistency it delivers a smooth and workable texture, which when combined with cement it creates high-quality mortar with strong bonding properties. We source our builders sand from three regional deposits, providing us with red, yellow, and mission grey sand. Once dried the mixture will set as a plain grey colour, regardless of the original colour.
Our Fill sand, also known as cable sand, is a manufactured fine aggregate with a consistency of 0/6mm grading, making it ideal for use as a non-structural backfill material across a range of groundworks and civil engineering applications. Due to its compacting nature and consistency it is ideal for the use beneath pipework, ducting, concrete slabs, paving, and flagging. Fill sand is frequently chosen for utility trench reinstatement and void filling where a stable and compactable layer is required.
Recycled, washed Grit or Sharp Sand is produced from crushed, inert, recycled construction materials. It can be used under flags and paving on top of a good compact sub base. It has good water drainage properties as a result of its coarse grading. The grain size is 0/4mm.
