Road planings, also referred to as tarmac scalpings, are produced by a cold milling machine slowly rolling over a tarmacked area. The machine scrapes the surface layer of tarmac away from the road sub base which is then loaded onto wagons. Planings can be delivered direct from the site they are being recycled from but this will result in a product with an in-consistent sizing. If the material is subsequently processed through crushing and screening a more uniform grade is achieved which is usually 40mm or 20mm down to dust. Their availability depends on new road building activities within the area providing a source material.
Once cooled, the material makes a hard wearing weather resistant material comparable with a quarried aggregate. Road planings are perfect for use as a top layer of aggregate in high traffic or weather exposed areas. This includes car parks, footpaths, farm tracks and haul roads. Depending on the level of traffic a suitable sub-base that can withstand the expected loads should be prepared and laid first. Availability depends on activities within the local area but at least one grade of product is usually available. As there isn’t a requirement to mine the product first, there are savings in the production process. This saving can be passed onto the consumer providing a cost effective solution for those on a budget.
